More recently, it was part of the fig collection of Belleclaire Nursery in Plainfield, NY where it became available to US growers. This fig was a favorite at Belleclaire because it is early-ripening and has good resistance to rain and humidity. Malta Black is said to be a grandparent fig of the popular Celeste variety and although its leaves bear some similarity to Mt. Etna types, there is no relation between the two. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMalta Black has a purple\/black skin and a round shape. It grows on trees with 3-5 lobed leaves that have a rough, sandpaper texture. Malta Black produces two crops of medium sized figs. Their thick skin and tight eyes give them the rain and humidity resistance that growers love. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e**All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout.  Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October\/November) will ship out first in November\/December.  If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refrigerator until you are ready to root them.  They will be perfectly fine.
